Why household employers get caught out

If you employ a domestic worker, gardener or carer at home, you are an employer in South African law — even if it does not feel like running a business. When a payslip is missing, the first place it hurts is a dispute: at the CCMA or the Department of Employment and Labour, the employer without records starts from behind.

The good news: a compliant payslip takes about a minute. Fill in the wages and hours, and the generator produces a clean PDF with every BCEA section 33 item, including the automatic UIF deduction.

How to create one

1. Open the free generator and enter your name as employer (household employers use their own name and home address).
2. Add the worker's name, occupation (e.g. Domestic worker), pay period and payment date.
3. Enter the wage, any overtime, and leave PAYE at 0 unless the worker's pay is above the tax threshold and you are registered with SARS — most household employers only handle UIF.
4. Download the PDF, give a copy to your worker, and keep one signed copy for your records.

A note on UIF registration

Generating a payslip does not register you with the UIF — that is a separate step on uFiling. The payslip's UIF line assumes you are registered (or registering) and shows the correct 1% employee deduction so your records line up from the first month.

Frequently asked questions

Does my domestic worker need a payslip?

Yes. A domestic worker is an employee under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), and section 33 requires the employer to give written particulars of payment — the same list of items as any other payslip — each time wages are paid.

Do I have to deduct UIF for a domestic worker?

If your domestic worker works more than 24 hours per month for you, you must register as an employer with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and deduct 1% of the worker's remuneration as the employee contribution (you contribute another 1% as employer). This generator calculates the 1% employee deduction automatically, up to the monthly ceiling.

What must be on a domestic worker's payslip?

Employer name and address, employee name and occupation, the pay period, payment date, wage rate and overtime rate, hours worked, gross pay, every deduction with its reason, and the net amount paid — the BCEA section 33 list.

Can I pay cash and still give a payslip?

Yes. The payslip records what was paid and how it was calculated; the payment method does not remove the obligation to issue one. Keep a signed copy as proof of what was paid.
